Maintenance of Mooimak River improves flow and boosts jobs in Mamre

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has successfully completed a R200 000 maintenance project along the Mooimak River (also known as the Louwskloof River) in Mamre.

Work undertaken between September and October 2025, focused on removing excess silt, alien vegetation and litter; to reduce the risk of flooding and improve water flow.

A total of 40 local residents were employed for the duration of the four-week project, creating short-term job opportunities within the Mamre community.

‘We are committed to maintaining rivers and restoring channels as they course through communities of all sizes. Small communities are just as important to us as larger ones, which is why we prioritise the cleaning and maintenance of this watercourse. Equally important are the employment opportunities that these projects create to help support livelihoods,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

Mamre is a small rural town on the northern boundary of the city. The river corridor is surrounded by small-scale farmers, most of whom have fences erected up to the edge of the riverbank.

Further work to stabilise eroded embankments affected by recent flooding is in planning.
